Karla Moy – HustleGRL.com

When did you create HustleGRL?

I started the blog when I was about 16.

What made you get into blogging?

I’ve been blogging since I was 11 or 12 and it’s pretty funny, I had my own personal blog but it was just like an online journal, I didn’t really tell people about it and I had a circle of friends who ran blogs. Then I stopped for a while and got more into the design side of things like designing websites and basically graphics and then everybody started blogging and I’m like, “why not start my own blog” and have a place where people can get information about me and see what I like. That’s when I decided to start Hustlegrl.com

What blogs do you follow personally?

Well I’m more into the hip hop blogs like Nahright.com and Rapradar.com. I’m also into the local blogs like Legendsleague.com, 1loveto.com, Cocoandlowe.com, Lissamonet, Iluvlola.net more of the local stuff with my circle of friends; I try to go into stuff with them as well.

Do you blog for iluvlova.net as well?

I don’t really post, I maintain the graphics of the site, so if there are any technical problems, I deal with that.

What other websites have you created and also maintain?

I maintain Drake’s fan site which is Allthings-fresh.net. I created it, I maintain it, pretty much anything that has to do with the site, it’s all me behind it. It’s fun because it’s his official fan site, so all the fans go there and I get to see their reactions to stuff.

Building the Hustlegrl Empire, what would you say has been your biggest achievement so far?

I think my biggest achievement has been working with Young Money and Lil Wayne. It’s not like I directly work with them, I have a middle man, but they still acknowledge me and know who I am. They knew that I did the No ceilings artwork and ever since, the relationship grew and now whenever they need something, they contact me and I do it for them. I mean they’re pretty much the biggest hip hop crew out right now and Lil Wayne is one of the biggest rappers out right now and I actually get to work with them at such a young age. I’m a female so the fact that they have respect for me is really cool.

Being a female, do you think that’s changed your opportunities in any way?

It’s actually made things easier because so many guys dominate the industry and once they hear that there’s a girl out there and she’s actually good, they all rush to her you know? So being a female has actually been a good thing for me.

Describe your personal style

I love tights and I recently started wearing boots and heels because I’m getting older, I can’t always wear sneakers, although I really love them. I like Nike Dunks and graphic tees. I’m a fan of Ransom, Livestock and now I really like American apparel. I’ll always have my tights though because I feel so free in them.
